Dressing for a Crafty Christmas

Dressing for a Crafty Christmas

By Kasey Dugan

Grab your paper-chain-garlands and handmade ornaments: the year of whimsy is not over just yet! It appears that 2025’s whimsy-fixation has inevitably wormed its way into our holiday moodboards as a much needed remedy to a bleak year.

Crafty Christmas embraces the kitsch and garishness of Christmas, urging us to reach for paper decorations, twinkle lights, and excessive displays of tinsel. To juxtapose the holiday hedonism, embroidered linens and winter foliage bring a touch of yule

But Crafty Christmas doesn’t just apply to interior spaces. It applies to wardrobe as well. At Holy Thrift, we’ve been thinking back to The Frazzled English Woman: a former micro-trend that celebrated the chicness of being “all over the place.” Think Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones Diary running through London without her pants. Or Kate Winslet in The Holiday sobbing [hilariously] over her tea kettle.

Crafty Christmas nearly comes with the territory of being a Frazzled English Woman; it’s a culmination of homemade charm, scatter-brainedness, and unique traditions. So to channel both energies this holiday season, we ask you to look no further than Molly Weasley of Harry Potter for inspiration. (I dare say this does not need much explaining!)

Here we breakdown a few pieces that are essential to unlocking the look.. Click any image to shop

A Cozy Cardigan

Picture yourself in your quaint cottage: your peppermint tea is steeping and your kitchen table has been hijacked by an overwhelming amount of gift wrapping papers. You’re obviously going to be wearing a cardigan.. the perfect layer for a chilly night in. These two options are stylish with their buckle and ruffles, meaning you won’t be caught off-guard if a certain someone unexpectedly shows up.

Embroidered Details

Like felt-sewn ornaments and glass-blown baubles, a Crafty Christmas lover is going to swoon for embroidered clothing. This poppy-flower-skirt and delphinium-sweater will warm up any room this winter.

Wearing "crowns"

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince shows viewers a cozy look at the Weasleys celebrating Christmas. Perhaps none of us can look as effortless as Mr. Weasley in a paper crown, but Molly Weasley seems like the kind of eccentric spirit who never backs down from a good hat. Our cable knit cap is sure to make things merry and bright, but you also can’t go wrong with the twinkling studs on our fishtail hat. Both will keep you warm and stylish, so consider them our “crowns” for good measure.

Sweater Dresses

A Crafty Christmas gal would not shy away from dressing up like a Christmas tree if she had the means.. but on the simpler side, she’d also appreciate kitschy knitwear. Our fair isle sweater dress is a callback to Après ski sweaters of the 1960s. But if you prefer something you can dress up or down, consider these outrageous green stripes. The pockets are functional (which deserves a round of applause) and the buttoned sleeves come undone.

Chic Outerwear

The suede buckle jacket has a hint of bohemian flair: can’t you picture yourself with some flared jeans and a hobo bag? And this cherry red trench would be perfect with some candy cane striped tights. These pieces are unique enough that they can be dressed up or down, really, and require minimal styling on the wearer’s part. That’s why we believe a Frazzled English Woman would reach for them over-and-over around this time of year. Who has time to plan outfits when there’s so much baking to be done?

Pure Molly Weasly

Molly Weasley loves warm, woodsy tones and natural textures. Tartans, stripes, florals and ginghams are her most-worn prints throughout the franchise. That’s why this warm, pin-stripe skirt and embellished sweater are our top picks for achieving Molly’s look. She wears these pieces together or separately with a rust-colored coat over the top to seal together the warm-toned look. We’re particularly drawn to the tinsel bits-and-bobs of the sweater, which would be the perfect piece to wear for an evening of holiday crafting.

Whimsy Touches

A Crafty Christmas fashionista appreciates the joy of sugar plums and tiny trinkets, so this charm necklace is the perfect gift for herself. Adorned with intricate flowers and fruit-like charms, this locket necklace is a rare find that will elevate any whimsical winter outfit. And what better bag for a crafty gal than a bag made of ribbon fringe? If there was ever an accessory to wear to a tree-decorating party, it’s this one.

We hope these picks give you inspiration for all the fuzzy feelings this holiday season!
